The term ritual can frequently carry a negative connotation. Many of us think of mindless and seemingly pointless activities. Yet, rituals are used on a daily basis. We are in the process of instilling some rituals like bed-making, feeding the dog, and picking up toys into our four-year-old. Some common rituals you may have are drinking a cup of coffee each morning, reading before bed, or going for a jog after work.
I have a daily morning ritual: I fix my coffee with just the right amount of French Vanilla creamer and have a time of reading my Bible and journaling every morning. I love this time that helps me prepare for the day and grow.
Rituals also enable mastery. Larry Bird had a ritual of shooting hundreds of baskets every day. That’s how he became one of the all-time greatest basketball players.
As an individual or as a company it is important to have rituals in place to master your craft, process, and create consistency. Here are three rituals that we do as a team at Pinnacle Homes:
Weekly team meeting.
Every Monday morning, we have a meeting as a team. This time helps us get out of “weekend mode” and start the week off with a bang! We talk about our schedule, and what deadlines we have. We talk about areas in which we excelled along with areas that would could improve on. We also go over our Core Values as a company. This helps us stay in line with who we want to be.
Weekly toolbox talk
At our weekly meeting we have what OSHA terms a “toolbox talk.” We talk about safety. Safety is very important to us, and we teach, train, and reinforce how to work safely. We want our team to be safe and to go home to their families free from harm every night.
Monthly Leadership meeting
This is a time when the leadership of our company gets together and discusses the state of the business. We discuss concerns that we can improve on as well as opportunities to pursue. We teach and remind what leadership is all about and learn how to be good leaders. As John Maxwell said, “Everything rises and falls on leadership.” Our leaders must be constantly growing to lead well.
Our motto, or tagline, at Pinnacle is “building your trust,” and these three rituals help us stay in line with what our mission is – to build our client’s trust.
What about you? Do you have rituals? I would love to hear your comments!
